Después de una serie de cambios en su formación, el grupo se asienta con Hope, Ehart, el violinista Robby Steinhardt, el teclista y vocalista Steve Walsh y el guitarrista Rich Williams. La canción, con grandes influencias de rock progresivo, fue lanzada como un sencillo en octubre de 1976 y alcanzó la posición Nº 11 en la Billboard Pop Singles al año siguiente,1 convirtiéndose en la primera canción de la banda en alcanzar las primeras 40 posiciones en una lista de popularidad.
El sencillo fue certificado como Disco de Oro por la RIAA.

"Dust in The Wind" es la septima canción en el álbum discográfico Point of Know Return lanzado en 1977, interpretada y grabada por la banda de rock progresivo Kansas.
Llegó al n.º 6 lugar de las listas de popularidad del Billboard Hot 100 en la semana del 22 de abril de 1978 siendo éste el único sencillo de Kansas que ha alcanzado entrar al top ten del Billboard Hot 100. Fue escrita por Kerry Livgren, y fue una de las primeras piezas acústicas de la banda; su melodía suave y su letra melancólica difiere ostensiblemente de otros éxitos de la banda, como "Carry On Wayward Son" y "The Wall". El interludio de la canción contiene una melodía distintiva y memorable solo de violín interpretado por Robby Steinhardt.
